My wife’s one month Toyota Crown Limited, with just 500 miles, lost full EV capability on a hot day in Austin, TX. After gentle driving, the electric motors stopped assisting at low speeds, leaving the gas engine to struggle for acceleration. The issue is intermittent, with no warning lights. Despite Toyota’s inspection, the dealership technician seemed unaware of the problem.

I’m concerned about how this happens in a tested powertrain and frustrated by the service department’s lack of explanation. Has anyone experienced something similar?

I don't remember having this issue, and it makes it hard to "guess" the cause without a log from warning lights. If it happens again, document when the issue occurs, like the terrain, temperature, and driving habits.

Yeah, I’ll start documenting the conditions if it happens again. This happened on a hot 98°F day, after 20 minutes of light city driving, with no warning lights. Has your Crown ever struggled in high heat, or could it be a battery cooling issue?

EV mode only lasts for a little while. When the battery runs out, the engine kicks in and gets loud since the motor isn’t helping. After a bit, the engine charges the battery and the motor starts working again. Of course documenting helps resolve future issues.
